CHAPTER-1
CHILDHOOD

Professor Dr.Mohamed Ali Essa is an eminent Indian Engineering educator who made significant contributions in Engineering Education. His contributions are in the education of the students through excellent teaching, course and program improvement, advising, student project and thesis direction and participated in other activities that enhance the development of students. His scholarly activities including research, design, writing and speaking that are recognized locally, nationally and internationally. He has fifty years worth experience in engineering design and manufacturing and the same years of experience in teaching mechanical engineering, engineering design, computer science and related subjects at various Engineering Colleges. Dr. Mohammed Ali Essa served as a visiting lecturer and professor at a number of educational institutions world wide and presented research papers at symposiums and conferences through out the world.

Dr. Mohammed Ali Essa received his PhD in 1978 from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT),Mumbai. His M.Tech was on Turbo machines from IIT Madras. But his research interests focuses on heat transfer and combustion. So he had to study thoroughly heat transfer, chemical kinetics , computer programming and Russian Language and selected a topic on Combustion Characteristics of Cyclone Furnace.

Dr. Mohammed Ali Essa was born in Cochin on 20th February 1942.Cochin is a vibrant City situated on the South west cost of the Indian Peninsula in  the breathtakingly scenic and prosperous state of Kerala, hailed as “God’s on Country”.Its strategic importance over the centuries is under lined by the sobriquet 'Queen of Arabian Sea'. Informally, Cochin is also referred as the Gateway of Kerala. His early childhood was, by all accounts a happy one. He was born in to a wealthy and influential family. His father Essa                                                 Ahamed Sait was an advocate. He took his law degree  from Madras Law Collegein 1936 and started practicing in Cochin. Adv. Essa Ahammed Sait, BABL was from a reasonably rich family of Kayamkulam but where as his mother, Rukaya Bai was from a poor family of Cochin. It was a love marriage at that time in 1936. Their marriage was conducted in Hajee Essa Hajee Moosa Memorial High School,Cochin. Still 1954 they had a luxurious life in Cochin. His father Adv. Essa Ahammed Sait was the first law graduate from their community in Kerala. He was having good income and they lived in a very royal way there. His father, Essa Ahammed Sait is the founder member of Iqbal Library in Cochin and founder member of Muslim League in Travancore Cochin area.

I would like to share his words : “My schooling was in Hajee Moosa Memorial School, Cochin. At that time no play school, LKG or UKG.I was admitted in a Madrasa at the age of four. Alhamdulillah, I completed Quran recitation at the age of five and then only admitted to school. My mother, Rukaya Bai taught me how to pray and my father used to take me to masjid sometimes. My uncle who was deaf and dumb was very pious and when I stay there he makes us wake up by fajar take us all to masjid and after prayer he used to buy tea and Vada for those who went for prayer. This gave an incentive to get up and go for fajar.

Islam is a practical religion and a way of life.Islam gives a wide meaning of Ibudath(things liked by Allah). It includes not only the duties to Allah like Prayer, Fasting, Zakath and Hajj, it also includes acquiring knowledge for religious purposes or worldly matters, earning money through Hallal means, helping parents and others, respecting elders, showing mercy to younger ones and so on.All that you do in life for the pleasure and satisfaction of Allah is Ibadath.

According to Islamic point of view if you want to excel in anything you do.

¨It should be for the satisfaction of Allah ie your intention (Niyath) should be good.
¨ You should have thorough knowledge(IIm) about that.

¨ You should be sincerely work to achieve that (Professional Excellence)

Each of these we will elaborate inshaAllah to know how you can achieve Professional Excellence in an Islamic perspective.

We were fortunate in our  childhood as we had enough space to play, good food to eat, good atmospheric air and water and good friends. But now children do not have grounds to play,no friends, air and water polluted and food containing poison.

No children remain in their flat remain in their flat playing video games getting mannerisms, air, water, and food make them sick. They even loose communication skills as they are always in closed room not even taking to their parents. If a guest comes in their house they are reluctant to talk leaving their game. They are interested in taking only junk food as it is tasty.
The major problem now is that all eat opposite food which gives them serious illness. Chicken and curd, fish and any milk product, different kinds of flush together are all opposite foods which
becomes poison according to Ayurveda. Also taking chilled water after food is dangerous.Taking of fast foods like noodles, pizza, hot dog etc make them weak and sick.We have to go back to our old life
style to keep healthy and happy.

The person who molded me are my Grand father and my mother. Unfortunately for us my father entered in to politics and became fully involved in political matters  forgetting his job. He stood for the assembly election in Cochin. Muslim League was in the                                         infant stage and he spent what ever he had for the election, but lost. C.H.Muhamed Koya was his junior in politics. My father could not come up of the crisis of loosing all money and loosing in the election. He became depressed and left Cochin in 1953 when I was studying in 7th standard in Hajee Essa Hajee Moosa Memorial High School in Mattanchery.”
